What the hell are you doing in there?

My good friend Kate has known me since we were in our 20s.

She’s seen me through countless creative projects, reinventions, businesses, hairstyles, and bad boyfriend choices - and she's always been one of my biggest cheerleaders on social media.

You know that friend you send memes and reels to all day long?

That's Kate.

Over the past year, I've been sharing a lot of client wins from my Foundations program, and she's usually the first to hit "like."

Last week, Kate came over for dinner and spotted the giant gong hanging on my wall.

Naturally, she wanted to know what the hell it was doing there.

(Yes, I have a sales gong. And yes, I use it.)

When I enthusiastically explained that I ring it whenever a client makes a sale, she gave me a wide-eyed look:

"I thought this was a business program. What the hell are you ladies doing in there?"

🤣🤣🤣

And apparently, she's not the only one wondering.

I’m heading to Washington, DC this weekend to lead a workshop on the energetics of sales for the Women Getting Visible Conference, and I've been getting some great questions about Foundations as we welcome new women this fall.

So, allow me to clear a few things up and answer top asked questions:

Foundations is my six-month, high-proximity group program for women entrepreneurs who are great at what they do but need a smarter, more reliable way to market and sell their work.

Together, we build the offers, messaging, and marketing systems that bring in clients without making your business your entire life.

Q: But seriously, what ARE you doing in there?

We’re building businesses that make money without making their owners completely miserable.

More specifically?

We’re clarifying offers, figuring out how to talk about the work you do so people actually want to buy it, and creating marketing and sales systems that don’t require you to spend your entire life on Instagram.

💜 It's highly individual.

One woman might be working on packaging her expertise into a signature offer.

Another might be rewriting her website messaging.

Someone else might be building an email sequence or figuring out why her content isn’t converting into clients.

There is course content to support each step of the process, but we start with a strategy session to build your individual path.

The goal is to ensure your marketing system will continue to work for you ongoing, so we build and test it.

And yes, when someone has a big win, I ring the gong. 🎉

Q: Do I need a website?

Nope.

You need a way for people to understand what you do and take the next step toward working with you.

Sometimes that’s a website. Sometimes it’s a landing page and an email list.

We're not building elaborate technology empires.

Q: What if I have no idea what I’m selling?

Well, this is important to clarify.

If you know what kind of work you do and who you want to help, but you’re struggling to package or position it? Great! That’s Foundations territory.

If you’re still deciding whether you want to be a life coach, open a bakery, or become a professional dog whisperer, you will need a different kind of support first.

This is a space to build the business around your genius once you are clear on what it is.

Q: What if I can’t make all the meetings?

It's Ok. Life happens and I record each meeting.

We have multiple weekly training and coaching opportunities, plus replays and asynchronous support between sessions.

You’re building a business around your LIFE. Not the other way around.

Q: What if I’m secretly a hot mess and everyone else has their act together?

First of all, welcome to entrepreneurship. 😂

Second, Foundations is a place where you can show up exactly as you are.

You can ask the question you think you should already know the answer to. Admit that something isn’t working. Change your mind. Try something that flops.

We’re here to take messy action, learn from it, and support each other along the way.

There’s strategy, yes. But there’s also laughter, encouragement, honest conversations, and celebrating the little things.

Q: When can I join?

Our next group of new members starts October 19, and I’m excited to welcome a handful of women this fall.

This is a six-month coaching experience with rolling enrollment, so you don’t have to wait for a big launch to get started.

Q: What if my business is already set up and I just need to get better at selling?

Then you might be more interested in the new Soul-Aligned Sales Studio, where we’re practicing weekly activities that create sales.

There’s a free level, plus Premium support for women who want more personalized strategy.

But if you’ve got expertise, a business you believe in, and a lot of scattered pieces of a marketing system?

Come talk to me about Foundations.

[Let’s Talk About Foundations →]

I’d love to help you get those pieces working together. (and hopefully ring the gong, 😊)

I think Kate was impressed with what I shared. Even if she still thinks some of my methods are a little out there.

But considering my first business was a rolling juice bar and I'm married to a drummer, I'm not sure what she expected.

Being a little out there has worked well for me.

Who wants in? 😂

xo, Deborah

PS. Yes, this is a serious business coaching program with a course, a community, a variety of payment plans, tools, templates, AI prompts, regular Loom feedback on your work, accountability to stay on track and expert leadership in both marketing & sales. We just also have a gong.

[2 min read; new episode] Not my finest moment, but true story: Years ago, I briefly considered a job selling paper. This was not some sophisticated literary product or elegant stationery set. It was actual reams of copy paper. 😳 The “training” involved a bunch of twenty-something dudes in cheap suits, group chants, jumping (yes.), and loudly celebrating how much paper team-members had sold. When I tell you I thought about jumping out the fire escape... I remember thinking: If THIS is sales,...

Sales studio is open. Join the Skool community.

Dear Reader, I've been hinting for weeks about a new space to practice sales. Before I kick off the first group session on Monday, October 5th, I wanted to make a few things clear to people. Over the past year, I’ve 3x’d my income while working considerably less than in the past. I did it without a lot of hustle, endless content, or the constant creation cycle most people think is required. You have not seen me host back-to-back launches. I'm not stacking a dozen new offers. And I'm...

Woman battling the Nor'easter but still reporting.

Happy Sunday Reader! Reporting in from the middle of the Nor'easter hitting the Boston coast-line, while visiting family. The winds and rain are pretty intense slapping against the windows, but truthfully, I stayed in my jammies, curled up with a coffee, and wrote in my journal for over an hour this morning, which was precisely what I needed. As I'm prepping for the week ahead, I've been thinking about why we do or don't feel safe to make sales in our businesses. The last 3 episodes of my...
