Before I say anything else, I want to take a moment to remember what Memorial day is actually for.

It's to honor the legacy and bravery of men and women who went off to defend our freedoms and didn't come home, and for the many families who never stopped waiting.

These freedoms we move through so casually every single day are because someone else paid for it, and I don't take that for granted.

Several members of my family including my grandfather and 2 uncles were enlisted during wartime and my own father was drafted into the army and served leading up to the Vietnam war.

In fact if he hadn't fulfilled his service and been honorably discharged, who knows if I'd ever have been born.

Whether they stepped forward willingly or answered a call to duty, they put themselves in harm's way for something bigger than themselves.

Sitting here, typing on my fancy computer, creating the rules to run my own business and having the autonomy to build a lifestyle that feels empowered and free, I owe that to them and all the other men and women who have sacrificed.

And on the unofficial start of summer, it has me thinking about what freedom actually means inside a business.

Here's the irony:

Many of us left jobs we didn't love for more freedom, and then accidentally built ourselves something harder to escape.

All while people took real summer vacations.
